Kutna Hora, the morbid

The abbot gathered the sand from the holy land, and scattered it in the cemetery when he returned.

"It has remnants from the holy land, I want to be buried there when I die." said every wealthy
person in Eastern Europe. The cemetery soon piled up with dead, wealthy people.

Then the plague struck and every person, regardless wealthy or poor were dropping like flies.

The Hussites waged war and even more people died.
The cemetery, bursting at the seams had to be exhumed to make more space. A blind monk tasked to do so, neatly stacked up the bones of the departed in the chapel.

Today gawking tourists peer into the little church with a chandelier made with every bone of the human body an
d the coat of arms of the Schwarzenberg family, and carefully tread the cemetery grounds with painfully cheery pansies placed at the tombstones of the buried. I dunno why, but I was strangely moved and felt like crying as I walked amongst the tombstones.
